Dear Spring,

It's almost the end of September... so where the eff are you?

I hate to throw a Veruca Salt style hissy fit but all this physio and back ache and general wooziness is not cool and frankly I think you owe it to me and every freezing cold Melbournian out there to shave off that beard and get out from under that mouldy rock you've been hibernating under. Give us some friggen ice-cream eating sunshiny weather why don't ya?

Also all this cloud is confusing the flowers and it's not like I've got time to go around putting gloves, parkas, and beanies on every Aquilegia, Anemone, Poppy, Daffodil etc in Melbourne.

Thanks to you I've been forced to post these stunning videos from Quay (a restaurant located in Melbourne's rival city Si Da Knee) b/c they remind me of when you (Spring) actually gave a shit about us Vitamin D deficient Melbournians and let the flowers bask in all your glory and bloom in peace.

So stop watching re-runs of 30 Rock and Flight of the Conchords (I'll take those DVDs thankyouverymuch), pick that spinach out of your teeth, and give us all a sunny high bloody five at the grand finals this weekend.

Because If you don't... I. WILL. CUT. YOU.

A little more than one week from Black Saturday...

This is by far the worst natural disaster that has occured in our little state of Victoria. Many towns, homes and businesses have been lost so I would encourage everyone to please make donations to the cause through the Red Cross.

Donations can also be made to RSPCA Victoria who are caring for pets, wildlife and livestock currently affected by Victoria's bushfires.

And remember: it'll only take a few seconds and every little bit counts!

Phew. Hehe ok I know it's been super super quiet around here but here is something to break the silence!

A couple of months ago I bought an old gocco on ebay and later (way later) plucked up the courage to put some batteries in it and create my first gocco print.

I started experimenting with sketches I drew that were inspired by the sea snail trails, intricate rock pools/formations and water reflections I saw at a beach in Sorrento (here, here, here and here).

I'm so used to working with endless amounts of colour so choosing just 4 colours was really a challenge, but an exciting one! The metallic aqua was this close to being pale blue and the whole yellow layer was very last minute (pretty much last second). Despite some of the problems (old bulbs... can I get an amen people?) I'm really happy how the print turned out in the end.

I also printed gift tags using the same screens I used for the print.

My digital camera decided to die right at the start of the trip so all of the pictures I took were on an old Pentax that I wasn't really sure how to use. Well, not really die.

Note to self: always make sure you've put the battery in the charger cradle correctly (you clumsy doofus, you).

I haven't had much experience with snow and have never seen snow fall from the sky which is why I will never forget the drive up to Cradle Mountain.

The road was winding to the point where it was almost hypnotic. Eventually my ears started to pop a little and the clouds seemed closer to us than before. I noticed a thin layer of mist on the road which gradually grew in size. The mist gathered in large clumps like semi-transparent clouds, it wasn't continuous at all (which is what I've always imagined pre snow fog to be like). As we drove further I couldn't stop blinking because each ghost-like clump softly thudded on the windscreen and then disappeared behind us.

And then something ressembling a white rain drop hit and then dissolved on the wind screen. The snow lasted for about five short minutes.

It was one of those "I can't believe this is really happening" moments. It was magic.

Ampalaya seeds (I think in English it's called bitter melon?) that my dad is trying to dry before planting. After his lemon tree failed (somehow it got taken over by mum's tomato plant) I think he's really determined to make something of his own work in the garden. The colour is exactly how they look in real life (I barely played with these on Photoshop) and as they dry the fleshy salmon skin turns deep blood red.

~~I updated my shop for the first time~~ (this item is currently unavailable... more news about where it will be available to buy to come!) with this print I've posted about before called 'The Fountain' (you can see closer details here: 1, 2, 3)!

This print was inspired by the fountain in my mother's garden, and the vines, orchids and other plants surrounding it. I love how the colour of the water changes with every season and from day to night (one time it even turned milky white... spooky). Right now because of the intense summer heat the pink Rhododenrons next to the fountain are losing their flowers, some of them are sitting right on top of the water waiting to sink to the bottom.

I'm always curious to know what kind of microorganisms have made it their home. This is what I imagine it would look like if I was small enough to scuba dive in there...

Above you can see pics of their packaging which I was working on today. I accidentally found some paper circles I cut from prints on thin paper I did last year so I'm putting them to good use. I know I haven't sold any prints yet... I guess I got a bit too excited about selling things and my first reaction was to pack the ones that were already printed (also I find packing them very therapeutic).

Pattern experiments for this week (was going to post last week but we had a modem problem). The first one was my second try at drawing a pattern on graph paper. On my first try I had a bit of a 'doh!' moment... my mechanical pencil was so sharp it tore a hole in the paper.

We're going cherry picking next week, I can't wait to get my hands on some sour cherries for my cherry pie. Also I can't wait to get this gorgeous issue of Idea Magazine next week! Ah, there is just so much beauty in this world...

Some experiments I've been working on/mulling over this week. I can't seem to stop myself when it comes to adding detail. I did promise myself that I'd try to stop for the experiment but it seems (with this Wagashi series at least) that adding detail for the sake of detail can't be stopped!

The W logo I made (for a future print series) in 20 minutes from fresh herbs/sweet pea leaves in our garden. Not sure which one I prefer yet!

After having fun cutting, pasting, and layering I'm starting to believe that every day should be an experiment. :}

Polas I took at the Blue Lotus Water Garden, unfortunately there were no Lotuses (they bloom in December) only Water Lilies but still well worth the drive!

It was all so inspiring, I wanted to stare for hours and hours looking at all the strange alien shapes and insects (maybe ghosts?) skipping and gliding across the surface of the lake. You can see more pictures here...

Lately I've been making notes/thinking about different ways to create images, and experimenting. Putting restrictions (I don't know if that's the right word?) on the material I use to make things. Maybe experiment with tactility, thread, toothpicks, leaves, pins. I think the trip yesterday spurred these thoughts on even more, and while I'm typing this I have a little box of things next to my laptop I've collected and want to experiment with. It will mean sticky fingers by the end of the day. I hope to make prints to share with you all, I hope you will like them. Most of all I hope the experiments will work out, but you never know until you try.

Is there a word to describe feeling excitement and fright all at once? I've never been good with words but I feel just like that...

1. I work better at night and during winter. Night, because it's darker and I'm easily distracted by things in my peripheral vision during the day. Winter, because I don't feel like a sweaty pile of goop. And I like the sensation of drawing with frosty finger tips and socks on my feet.

2. 98% of the time I draw/design on the floor, not sitting at a table.

3. Pet peeve: When I hear/see people complaining about global warming while nursing a cigarette between their fingers. I know, it's not cool to get all preachy. But c'mon smokers, cigarettes don't pop out of nowhere. How do you think they get rolled and packaged? And don't get me started on people who flick their butts on the sidewalk... anyway moving on...

4. I could happily watch episodes of Iron Chef (Japan) and So You Think You Can Dance all day.

5. I obsessively collect images of Wagashi from the net.

My mum adores anything and everything Blue Willow... so much so that I think if her blood was magnified there would be little floating platelets covered in their designs. She made a little squeaking sound when she saw these prints I made, so I guess she liked them. :}

It's bday time today but we're going to the Blue Lotus Water Garden for a belated celebration drive, just thinking about it is making me squeak! I'm 23. I still get a weird/unbalanced feeling typing that number. I miss 22... heck I miss 11!

My uncle dropped by with a pot of Kare-kare plus a cake pan of Bibingka and now I'm missing the Philippines so so much! I miss my morning camera walk, the uneven streets, 7am middle-of-the-road badminton, rice breakfasts and sweet street vendors bellowing out 'TAHO'. I'm going back, but next Christmas sounds so far away. Too far away. Is anyone else out there homesick?

In brighter news Nicole made a post about my work on her blog freshly{blended}! She made a post earlier about this Cina bag and I still can't believe it's made of laminated paper. Laminated paper I tellz ya!

I'm going on a small roadtrip up to Lorne for a couple of days. I've gotta find some of the Polaroid film I stashed away so I can click at the beach to my heart's content! Anyway about the fabric pics...

Earlier this year I was commissioned by Australian fashion designer Dhini to create patterns for her Spring 2007 collection 'Song of the Drowned'. I adored working on this project and learnt a lot in the process (this being my first attempt at pattern design).

Had someone told me months before that my first commission as a graphic designer would be so much fun I would've turned to them and said in my best valley girl accent 'OMG, like whatEVER.'

I will quickly post pictures of a project from last year. Digitally printed satin with my own design. The material was sewn into a sort of stole/long scarf shape. If digital printing for material was cheaper I'd do it more often... probably every day!

The house has gotten bright now that it's Spring, well on and off Spring anyhow due to the yo-yoing Melbourne weather.

Last weekend I bought this Moon/Moth Orchid to pretty up my desk. Only problem is I counted 13 15 buds, but I just couldn't resist and I doubt i'll be able to stop fawning over my new buddy.

This year I wanted to try and learn how to design patterns on my own which has been really tricky (who am I kidding... totally frustrating at times) but I'm tentatively getting the hang of it. Sorry the pics are so small, for some reason blogger cuts pics that are larger than 500px.

Lots of ideas running through my head like making wrapping paper, large scale posters, prints and other things but my thoughts have been leaning towards tinkering with my new Gocco... more about that soon. :}

Hm, does anyone reading this own a Gocco?

Maybe I'm just slow but it took me a while to figure out how a Gocco worked. When someone explained to me (before I'd even seen a picture of one) that it was a 'plastic box that lights up and makes instant prints' I was left even more confuddled.

I'm happy to say that this Gocco video makes sense and has pretty much convinced me to start scouring the almighty ebay for a Gocco of my own... ;}

Right now it's school holidays so I'm off to the Melbourne Aquarium with my aunt and younger cousins.

I'm going for the flaboyant marine creatures (namely the cephalopods), my cousins are going because they want to see something poisonous, and my aunt. Well, she's Filipino at heart. Experiments I've been chipping away at that remind me of:

1) Jellyfish tentacles
2) A strange worm-like skin disease that creeps underneath your skin and bones, turns your veins beige, and slowly sucks out your soul.

Hm, yeah. I'll stick to Jellyfish tentacles... for now.

Why the random morbidness? I think it might have something to do with the documentary I watched last night. King Herod had worms. Yup, it's a fact... and Happy Eater Monday to all! :}

A few of the 50 'pieces' I made that were going to be printed, cut and reassembled with brooch pins attached to the back. These paper brooches were to be attached to a white Adidas jacket customized for the Curvy 4 exhibition currently touring around Australia.

Instead I went with my old Orchid designs (1, 2), hole punched the remaining pieces of printed archival paper and sewed/glued the 'hole paper bits' to the jacket. Was in too much of a hurry to submit it to take photos, but if I do get it back I'll take a few. :}
